Handling of CO2

CO2 Management AS provides CO2 sequestration services, including advisory on CO2 capture and storage, as well as solutions for large-scale transport and infrastructure. We focus on collaborative, cross-border networks to efficiently transport CO2 from the terminal to offshore safe storage.

CCS and CCU

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies are pivotal in achieving the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement. While CCS focuses on the safe long-term storage of carbon dioxide, CCU repurposes captured CO2 as a carbon source, offering a complementary approach to mitigating climate change.

CCS Technology and Implementation
CO2 Management focuses solely on the hard-to-abate industries. Due to the fundamental characteristics of their operational processes, these industries continuously emit carbon dioxide. CCS technology involves capturing CO2 emissions at industrial sites, conditioning and transport, and securely storing them subsurface.

Today’s carbon dioxide emissions primarily come from power plants and industrial sites producing materials like ammonia, hydrogen, cement, and steel, which contribute to over 60% of global emissions. CCS targets these emissions, offering significant potential in reducing greenhouse gases. Captured CO2 is stored in geological formations such as saline aquifers or depleted oil and gas reservoirs, where it stabilizes over time through processes like dissolution and carbon mineralization. Safety measures are paramount in CCS. The risk of CO2leakage is minimized through careful site selection, leveraging the exploration and production industry, and ongoing geochemical and geophysical monitoring. To date, more than 200 million tons of CO2 have been safely stored worldwide in 18 commercial CCS projects, with no evidence of leakage.

Carbon Capture and Utilization
In parallel, CCU offers an innovative approach for sector coupling and promoting a circular economy. Captured CO2 finds use in various sectors, including as a chemical feedstock (for example, in urea, polymers, and methanol production), in enhanced oil recovery combined with storage (CO2 -EOR), and in creating products like concrete building materials, biochar, and CO2 -based fuels. Most of these chemical pathways are very energy-demanding, and rely on availability of cheap, green energy sources. Over time these applications might provide an incentive for CCS adoption, offsetting costs.

WHY NORWAY?

World leading experience in CCS
Norway has a unique position in the carbon capture and storage segment in Europe. The industry here has world-leading CCS experience through Europe’s two commercial CCS projects, namely Sleipner (1 Mt CO2 /yr stored since 1996) and Snøhvit (0.7 Mt CO2 /yr stored since 2008) as well as novel capture testing facilities at Technology Center Mongstad, Vestland. In addition, the first whole value-chain CCS flagship project Longship  will be operational from year 2024 supported by government funding, involving source point capturing, liquefication and transport by ships, and permanent CO2 storage (Northern Lights) in a deep saline aquifer located offshore of Western Norway with great upscaling potentials (initially 1.5 Mt CO2 /yr, scaling up to 5 Mt CO2 /yr). For context, storing 1 Mt of CO2 is equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed annually by around 40 million trees, which would cover an area about the size of 52,000 football fields.

Large scale CO2 storage capacity
The Norwegian Continental Shelf contains numerous potential offshore sites for safe and permanent CO2 storage (estimated 70 Gt capacity; equivalent of 233 years' worth of storage at rate of 300 Mtpa), and Western Norway can connect storage capacity to major CO2 emitting source points in other parts of Norway and Europe. Several countries have placed restrictions on the ability to store CO2 underground, thus increasing the need for cross-border CO2 transportation to countries where such storage is allowed, e.g. offshore in the North Sea where existing exploration and production occurs. While there is sufficient capacity to sequester several hundreds of years of CO2 emissions, one of the biggest challenges in the short term is to connect storage sites to local industry emitters, making this a top priority for CO2 Management.

Consultancy work

We offer consultancy work incorporating the latest advancements in carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies to guide businesses in hard-to-abate industries achieving their sustainability goals. Through our dedicated efforts, we aim to significantly reduce the carbon footprint, driving the transition towards a greener, more sustainable future. Our approach is rooted in innovation, collaboration, and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring our clients to meet their environmental objectives. Only a single consultancy project has been publicly disclosed. The project aimed at exploring efficient ways to capture, transport, and sequester CO2 emissions from the Thermal Waste Treatment Plant, was proven successful. Further details about the project are available here

Investments

CO2 Management AS invests in innovative technologies that can accelerate the ongoing energy transition targeting carbon-intensive industries to achieve sustainable energy production and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions in hard-to-abate sectors.

Current investment portfolio:

The Coast Center Base and our partner ZEG Power secured a substantial amount of funding for a pilot plant introducing clean and highly efficient production of hydrogen by patented ZEG-technology, with integrated CO2 capture. This funding will accelerate the deployment of this cutting-edge technology, paving the way for scalable, sustainable hydrogen production that aligns with global decarbonization goals.
